Hawk Talk : Mad Scientists & More

We made a bit of an omission from last week’s news: The Hawks Archery Club started up again in the first week of school this year. Practice normally takes place from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. There is also a practice on Wednesday mornings from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Any student from grade five through twelve is welcome to attend. JCC provides all equipment and there is no cost to come to a practice. Thank you so much to Mr. Sean Christensen, Mrs. Jennifer McCormick, and parent volunteer Mr. Sean McCormick (all NASP certified coaches) for donating their time to this program!

Parents of archers should know that there is an upcoming competition at Altario School on February 11th, with a cost of $5.00. Paperwork and money need to be turned in this week. Students will also have to decide by the end of the week if they are going to the NASP Nationals in Edmonton from March 10th to 13th — exact date and costs to be announced. Please let Mr. Christensen know what tourneys you are interested in.

The JCC concession was knocked out of commission on January 21st and 22nd thanks to modernization bugaboos. Numerous parents had to do impromptu fast food runs and Mr. K. narrowly avoided having to call in an addictions counselor. We are grateful to have Bridget back cooking for us again.

The grade fives are keeping busy. Both classes made geodes on the 22nd of January. The Roots of Empathy program continued at JCC with grade five students getting some baby time in on January 27th. Finally, Mr. Sandy Campbell did his Mad Scientist schtick on the 28th and everyone had to wear aprons and goggles because there was foam shooting EVERYWHERE.

Angie Warwick reports that the Hawks Sr. Boys Basketball team had a rough day on January 29th in Three Hills at the 2016 SuperMen Classic, losing 83-71 to Heritage Christian Academy and also losing 68-49 to the Livingston Sabres. The Hawks are grateful to both teams for the opportunity to compete against them.

There is much excitement about the upcoming annual Sweetheart Basketball Tournament on the weekend of February 13th. We are hoping to see lots of black and gold in the bleachers cheering on our Hawks!

Our Vice Principal, Mr. Bob White, is currently processing enrollments for ADLC, Lakeland College (Dual Credit), and the various CTS courses on offer at JCC. Please reach him in person or by email at bob.white@plrd.ab.ca if interested.

Final exams are done for Sr. High students and their new semester started on February first. The Archery Club and basketball teams will be relieved to get the use of the south gym back as it was out of service for test writing last week. There’s no relief for Jr. High students who are writing their mid-terms this week. Yuck!

Last, but not least, Jr. and Sr. High report cards will be going home on February 5th, so here’s hoping they’re full of good news and great grades.
